At just twenty-one years old, rising star Tyla has made a stunning entry onto the prestigious Billboard Hot 100 chart. Her hit single "Water" has taken the United States music scene by storm, propelling her to the 67th position on the chart dated October 14.
Since its release in July, "Water" has achieved remarkable success, accumulating 6.4 million official streams (a remarkable 22 percent increase), 3.1 million radio airplay audience impressions (an impressive 128 percent rise), and 1,000 downloads sold (a solid 9 percent growth) during the tracking week of September 29 to October 5, as reported by Luminate.
Tyla, known for her dynamic performances encompassing singing and dancing, has only a few singles to her name. Yet, industry experts already regard her as one of Africa's most promising talents. Signed to Epic Records (Sony), she gained significant attention by opening for American R&B sensation Chris Brown during his European tour earlier this year.
Her breakout hit, "Water," embraces the popular Amapiano style, originating in South African townships and gaining worldwide popularity. The track quickly went viral, particularly on TikTok, where a video of Tyla's dance moves garnered over 70 million views.
The official music video, blending R&B elements, has surpassed eleven million views on YouTube, while the song's streaming figures on Spotify even outpaced the global hit "Jerusalema" by South Africa's Master KG.
"Water" has transcended borders and currently ranks within the top 10 on the UK Official Singles Chart. As of October 11, the song has amassed nearly 50 million streams on Spotify.
Tyla achieved another milestone in her meteoric rise with her first international talk show appearance on the Swedish show "Bianca," hosted by Bianca Ingrosso. During the interview, the young artist discussed the remarkable success of "Water" and expressed her confidence in the song's potential to become a hit.
Reflecting on her journey, Tyla shared her excitement on ex-Twitter (X), stating, "I'm a South African born and bred in Johannesburg. It's crazy. Let's make our sound heard all over the world," as she prepares for her debut album. She described this achievement as "a victory for all of Africa."
