The 23-year-old student allegedly vanished with the intention of extorting a ransom from his parents.
After disappearing on Sunday, the student contacted his mother several days later, demanding a sum of 70,000 Kenyan shillings ($593; £494) in exchange for his release.
Reportedly, a portion of the requested ransom was paid on Wednesday.
However, law enforcement authorities revealed that the student had indulged in a drinking spree on the outskirts of Nairobi in the company of a woman who spiked his drink and stole the money.
Following the night of drinking, the student made another ransom demand on Thursday and received a second payment. Yet, he was promptly apprehended, and the funds were discovered concealed within his shoes.
According to Kenyan police, the student confessed to having misused the money intended for his last semester's tuition fees. He admitted to fabricating his own kidnapping as a means to acquire additional funds.
