The situation in Derna has reached catastrophic levels, prompting the declaration of a disaster zone. The aftermath of this event has been devastating, with entire neighborhoods and their residents being swept away into the sea. These distressing details were confirmed by Ahmed Mismari, the spokesperson for the Libyan National Army, which exercises control over eastern Libya.
The confirmed death toll currently stands at 61; however, this number does not account for the casualties in Derna. Regrettably, access to the city is currently restricted, making it challenging to gather accurate information. Aid officials estimate that the death toll in Derna alone could be around 150, and there are concerns that this number may rise even further, potentially reaching 250.
Shedding light on the dire situation, Tamer Ramadan, the head of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies' delegation in Libya, emphasized that the country is grappling with a large-scale disaster that surpasses the capacities of both the Libyan government and the national society. The scale of the devastation is immense, necessitating external assistance and support to effectively address the crisis.
