Renowned South African jazz bassist Spencer Mbadu has passed away at the age of 68. The cause of his death is currently unknown.
Music professional Glenn Hilton Robertson announced the news on social media, sharing a photo of Mbadu and expressing his sadness at his untimely passing. Fellow musicians and creatives aslo paid tribute to Mbadu, recognizing his significant contributions to jazz and fusion.
Murray Anderson, a composer and sound engineer, mentioned recording Mbadu in 1991 and his involvement in the Nelson Mandela 46664 recordings. Jazz vocalist and composer Ami Williams and photographer and filmmaker Vuyo Giba also expressed their sorrow and shared their experiences with Mbadu.
Born in Kensington, Cape Town, Mbadu developed an interest in music from his grandmother and began playing various instruments before settling on the bass. He joined several bands and collaborated with esteemed musicians throughout his career.
Mbadu also shared his knowledge and skills through teaching positions and recordings with the Cape Jazz Band. His legacy will be remembered in the South African jazz scene.
