It has emerged that Malawi is one of the countries in Southern Africa with the worst border controls coupled with thousands of unchartered routes.
The situation, according to security experts, has resulted in making it the easiest route for illegal immigrants who trek to South Africa for greener pastures.
In 2019, hundreds of illegal immigrants who had tricked their way through all border points in the country, were caught dead in Mozambique in a van that was ferrying them to South Africa.
Recently, 72 Ethiopin suspected migrants were intercepted, in one of the forest reserves, where they were in hiding, by the Malawi police service.
Subsequently, over 20 dead bodies of some illegal immigrants were also discovered in Mtangatanga forest in Mzimba where they were hiding.
Minister of homeland security, Jean Sendeza, describes the security situation in the country as pathetic.
She told BBC focus on Africa: "it is a sorry state. It is a pathetic situation. As a government we're really condemning this kind of activity. It's not right. It's not good."
She stressed, security agencies will have to get to the bottom of the matter and bring perpetrators of the act to book.
Meanwhile, other reports allege that some influential people in government might be masterminding the business of aiding illegal immigrants in the country.
In 2020, a high court convicted Uladi Mussa, the then minister of homeland security, for aiding illegal immigrants to obtain a Malawian passport.
